In 1960, Yamanashi Silk Center Co., Ltd. (now Sanrio) was established in Tokyo with the aim of establishing a social communication business.
In 1974, "Hello Kitty" and "Patty&They created the character "Jimmy." Based on the company philosophy of "everyone getting along," the characters born at Sanrio are active all over the world, bringing smiles to people's faces.
Sanrio is derived from the Spanish phrase "San Rio," meaning "Saint River." It embodies the desire to build a sacred culture on the banks of the river where humankind is said to have first settled, and the wish to create a community where people can live together harmoniously, showing consideration for one another.
The company celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2020.
