![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() On the boundary between the East of my youth and the West of my future—a record of a soul wandering and running from town to town, night to night. This is photographer Yutaka Amano's first large-scale personal collection, a work in progress on the road. Yutaka Amano, who started taking photographs at the age of 30 and immediately won a major photography award, has turned his back on exhibitions and photobooks, instead traveling around the country sleeping in a kei car given to him by his ex-girlfriend, and continuing his unique photographic and presentation method called "Eihyo," where he specifies the date and place on social media, charges 1,000 yen per book as an admission fee to customers who show up, and shows his photobooks one-on-one. This work, "Alone Together," chronicles nearly 20 years of "sharp and elusive" days spent by Yutaka Amano, who has continuously taken photos of "within a 5-meter radius of himself" using a compact digital camera or smartphone. It is composed of snapshots that are stained with the sweat, tears, and bodily fluids that seep out of that life. Money, violence, women, drugs, friends, and all sorts of encounters and partings. A series of miraculously beautiful moments, scooped up from days on the brink of collapse. This book includes, at the end, three conversations between Yutaka Amano and editor/photographer Kyoichi Tsuzuki, who has followed Amano's career from its very beginning and also edited this book, taking place in 2017, 2022, and 2025. They discuss how the artist has remained true to his own form of expression, from his days of wandering to the COVID-19 pandemic. This book features 154 works in color, including Amano's poems, written in a style as sharp as a finely honed blade. It is bilingual in English and Japanese. A publishing label that "does" things that humans don't do. |
