This is the first large-scale collection of solo works by photographer Amano Yutaka, and it is a work in progress, on the road. Amano Yutaka began taking photographs at the age of 30 and quickly won a major photography award, but instead turned his back on exhibitions and photo books. He traveled around the country sleeping in a minicar given to him by his ex-girlfriend, specifying the date, time and location on social media, and showing his photo books one-on-one to customers who showed up, charging 1,000 yen per book. This is his unique approach to photography and exhibition, known as "Eihyo." This work, "Alone Together," captures the nearly 20-year journey of Yu Amano, who has been taking only photos of "those within a five-meter radius of himself" with compact digital cameras and smartphones. It is made up of snapshots that are covered in sweat, tears, and bodily fluids from that lifestyle. Money, violence, women, drugs, friends, various encounters and partings. A series of miraculously beautiful moments, rescued from days on the verge of collapse. The book includes three conversations between Amano Yutaka and editor/photographer Kyoichi Tsuzuki, who has been following Amano Yutaka since the beginning of his career and also worked on editing this book, held in 2017, 2022, and 2025. The conversations discuss the artist's journey from his wandering days through the COVID-19 pandemic and how he has maintained his own style of expression. This book contains 154 works in color, including Amano's poems, written in a style like an over-sharpened blade. It is bilingual in Japanese and English. A publishing label that "does" what humans don't do. |
